Originally inhabited by the Lucayan Indians, San Salvador is the place where Christopher Columbus set first set foot on his conquest of the New World. San Salvador is the most eastern Bahamian island and hence the first island Columbus would have seen coming from the Europe to the east. The beachfront where he landed is now a monument to that historical day. San Salvador was originally named Watlings Island after Christian mariner Capt. John Watling.
